Friend failure

No matter what I try -giving out my code, -typing in someone elses code, or inviting friends I get no-one. I find this very frustration and will be giving up the game soon as this part appears to be hopeless. The other games I have have no such problems. What is the secret to this one. Thanks. I am starting to see responses. I didn't know that the waiting room contained people contacting me I thought they were the ones that I had sent requests to.

How do I accept and make those "waiting" my friend? I saw in another post the waiting tab is full of players contacting me, is this true and if so how then do I accept or add them so that I may begin to visit/gift, etc.???
